Greek Style Baked Salmon

My family had dinner at our favorite local Greek restaurant last Friday. We usually order souvlakis but that day, we decided to try different dishes in the menu. My oldest son and I ordered the ribs, my husband had the roast lamb, my son’s girlfriend had the lamb chop and my youngest son had the salmon. I was able to taste the salmon and I was impressed at how tasty and delicious it was. I usually cook salmon once a week for my family and so for this week, I decided to make this Greek-style baked salmon. I found a recipe and after minimally adapting it based on what I have in my pantry, I was able to make this baked salmon. The salmon turned out smelling so good and very flavorful. It goes well with rice or salad and with tzatsiki sauce. Enjoy!

Cooking Tips for Perfectly Baked Salmon

When baking salmon, the key is to keep an eye on the cooking time. Salmon can quickly go from perfectly flaky to dry if overcooked. A general rule is to bake it at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 12 to 15 minutes, depending on the thickness of the fillet. To check for doneness, gently press the salmon with a fork. If it flakes easily and the flesh is opaque, it is ready. Another tip is to let the salmon rest for a few minutes after baking. This allows the juices to redistribute, making it even more tender and flavorful. Consider using a fish spatula for serving; it gently lifts the salmon without breaking it apart. If you want to add a bit of zing, you can sprinkle some lemon juice over the salmon right before serving. This brightens up the flavors and complements the Greek seasonings beautifully.

Serving Suggestions to Elevate Your Meal

Greek-style baked salmon pairs wonderfully with a variety of sides. A fresh Greek salad is an excellent choice, with tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, and feta cheese drizzled with olive oil and lemon juice. This not only adds color to your plate but also enhances the Mediterranean flavors of the salmon. For a heartier option, serve it alongside lemon rice pilaf. The citrus in the rice matches the flavors of the salmon and makes the meal feel more complete. If you want to keep it light, consider a side of roasted vegetables, like zucchini and bell peppers, tossed in olive oil and herbs. Finally, don’t forget the tzatziki sauce. It adds a cool, creamy element that balances the richness of the salmon and is perfect for dipping or drizzling over your dish.

Storage Instructions and Variations

If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Baked salmon generally lasts for about three days. When reheating, do so gently in the oven or microwave to avoid drying it out. If you’re feeling adventurous, consider using the leftover salmon in different dishes. Flake it into a salad for lunch, mix it into pasta with a light cream sauce, or use it as a filling for a wrap. Variations for this recipe can also be fun to explore. You might want to try adding different herbs or spices. Dill and oregano work well with salmon, and a bit of smoked paprika can add a nice depth of flavor. For a spicy kick, toss in some crushed red pepper flakes. Experimenting with these variations can keep the dish exciting and tailored to your taste.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I use instead of salmon?

If you’re not a fan of salmon, try using trout or another fatty fish like mackerel. Just keep in mind that cooking times may vary slightly, so check for doneness accordingly.

How should I store leftovers?

Store any leftover salmon in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. Reheat gently in the oven to avoid drying it out, or enjoy it cold in a salad.

Can I make this salmon ahead of time?

You can prep the marinade and coat the salmon a few hours in advance. Just keep it covered in the fridge until you’re ready to bake it, which helps the flavors soak in.

What sides pair well with this dish?

This Greek-style baked salmon goes great with a fresh Greek salad, rice pilaf, or roasted vegetables. Tzatziki sauce is a must for dipping, adding a refreshing touch.

What are common mistakes when baking salmon?
