Baked Chicken Wings (Japanese Style)

My friends have been asking me to share more chicken wings recipes especially now that Superbowl is a short few weeks away. This recipe is a much healthier version of the original Japanese chicken wings recipe because it is baked and not fried. The original recipe calls for frying the wings first and then baking them with the sauce. In this recipe, I decided to bake the chicken wings throughout the entire cooking time. The wings are first seasoned with salt and olive oil and then were baked for half hour on their own and then with the sweet and tangy sauce for another 45 minutes more. The result as you can see are these sticky tangy Asian style baked chicken wings. These baked Japanese chicken wings are simply delicious. My family enjoyed them so much and I will definitely be making these in the future! Enjoy!

Cooking Tips for Perfect Wings

To achieve the best texture for your baked chicken wings, start with patting them dry using paper towels. This helps remove excess moisture and allows the skin to crisp up nicely in the oven. For even cooking, arrange the wings in a single layer on the baking sheet, making sure they are not crowded. This helps the heat circulate around them. Turning the wings halfway through baking will also ensure they cook evenly and get that nice golden color on all sides. If you want even more flavor, consider marinating the wings in the seasoning mix for a few hours or overnight. This gives the wings time to soak up all those delicious flavors. Lastly, keep an eye on the wings during the last few minutes of baking. Broiling them for a minute or two at the end can help amplify that crispy texture, but be careful not to burn them.

Serving Suggestions and Pairings

These baked Japanese chicken wings are great on their own, but pairing them with some tasty sides can elevate your meal. Consider serving them with a side of steamed rice or even some fluffy jasmine rice to soak up the sauce. For a refreshing contrast, a simple cucumber salad dressed with rice vinegar and sesame oil complements the sweetness of the wings nicely. If you want to add a little crunch, some pickled vegetables can provide that extra texture. For dipping sauces, a side of soy sauce mixed with a bit of chili oil or a sweet chili sauce works well. These wings also shine as part of a larger spread for game day. Add some veggie sticks and a creamy dip to round out your platter. Everyone will enjoy the variety, and it makes for a fun, casual dining experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use other types of wings besides chicken?

If you’re looking for a change, turkey wings would work well too. Just keep in mind that cooking times might vary since turkey wings are larger.

What can I substitute for vinegar in this recipe?

If you don’t have vinegar on hand, citrus juices like lemon or lime juice can give you a similar tangy flavor. Just adjust the amount to taste since they can be more acidic.

How should I store leftover wings?

Store any leftover wings in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days. To reheat, pop them in the oven at a low temperature to keep them crispy.

Can I make these wings ahead of time?

You can prep the wings and the sauce a day in advance. Just keep them separate in the fridge and bake them fresh when you’re ready to serve.

What’s a good side dish to serve with these wings?

These wings pair perfectly with a fresh salad or some steamed rice. You can also add some pickled vegetables for a nice crunch.
