Steamed Bok Choy with Garlic Sauce I love bok choy. It is quite common for me and my family to order this Chinese cabbage when we eat at Chinese restaurants. Therefore, it is no surprise that I also love to cook with this vegetable at home. This steamed bok choy dish is simple and very healthy. It consists of steamed bok choy with a sauce made of pan fried garlic and soy sauce. What I like about this dish is how quick and easy it is to make. The garlic sauce goes really well with the bok choy. Not to mention, it is also my hubby’s favorite dish to have. When I make this simple dish for my family, I usually partner this dish with pork adobo. Steamed Bok Choy with Garlic Sauce

Cooking Tips for Perfect Bok Choy

To get the best texture and flavor from your bok choy, start by selecting fresh, vibrant heads. Look for leaves that are crisp and green, without any yellowing or wilting. Before cooking, rinse the bok choy thoroughly to remove any dirt or grit that might be hiding in the leaves. When steaming, arrange the bok choy in a single layer in your steamer basket. This ensures even cooking. Keep an eye on the steaming time; bok choy cooks quickly, usually in about 5 to 7 minutes. You want the leaves to be tender but still have a bit of crunch. If you prefer a deeper flavor, consider adding a splash of sesame oil to the steaming water. This gives the bok choy a subtle nutty aroma that enhances the overall dish.

Serving Suggestions

Steamed bok choy with garlic sauce pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. For a complete meal, consider serving it alongside grilled or sautéed proteins like chicken, beef, or tofu. The mild flavor of bok choy complements stronger flavors, so don’t be afraid to experiment with different marinades or spice blends. If you want to add some more color and nutrition to your meal, consider serving bok choy with a side of jasmine rice or quinoa. For a more Asian-inspired meal, serve it with fried rice or noodles tossed in soy sauce. Garnishing your bok choy with sesame seeds or sliced green onions adds a nice touch and a bit of crunch, making your dish not only tasty but visually appealing as well.

Storage Instructions and Variations

If you have leftover bok choy, store it in an airtight container in the fridge. It should stay fresh for about 3 days. When reheating, a quick steam or microwave method works best to retain its texture. Bok choy can also be eaten cold in salads. Just chop it up and toss it with your favorite dressing for a refreshing crunch. For variations, try adding a splash of rice vinegar or a pinch of red pepper flakes to your garlic sauce for an extra kick. You can also mix in other vegetables like carrots or bell peppers when steaming. This not only adds color but also boosts the nutrient content. For a heartier version, add some cooked shrimp or chicken to the mix, making it a one-pan meal that’s both satisfying and delicious.
