Honey Mustard Salmon

If you have a family like mine who loves salmon, you should try making this baked salmon with honey mustard sauce. It is super easy to make and delicious as well. My husband and my oldest son normally like baked salmon with just the basic seasoning: olive oil and seasoning salt. But once in a while, they like to try new salmon recipes especially if it consists of Dijon mustard. In this recipe, a creamy mixture of mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, honey, green onions, cider vinegar, salt and pepper was spread over the salmon before it was baked in the oven for 20 minutes. Salmon when properly cooked would be soft, moist and succulent. The reserved mayonnaise mixture was served with the salmon and was also used as a dressing for the salad that I served with the salmon. Yummy!

Cooking Tips for Perfect Salmon

To achieve perfectly cooked salmon, start by choosing the right fillet. Look for fresh, bright orange salmon without any browning or dull spots. When preparing the salmon, let it sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes before cooking. This helps it cook evenly. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal baking. If you’re using skin-on salmon, place it skin side down on the baking sheet. This prevents the fish from sticking and makes for easier serving. Keep an eye on the salmon while it cooks. A good rule of thumb is to bake it for about 10 minutes per inch of thickness. Use a fork to check for doneness; the fish should flake easily but still be moist. If you prefer a slightly crispy top, broil it for the last couple of minutes of cooking. Just be careful not to overdo it, as salmon can dry out quickly. A meat thermometer can also be handy; aim for an internal temperature of 125 to 130 degrees Fahrenheit for perfectly cooked salmon.

Serving Suggestions

This honey mustard salmon pairs beautifully with a variety of sides. For a healthy option, consider serving it alongside steamed asparagus or roasted Brussels sprouts. Both vegetables complement the richness of the salmon while adding a pop of color to your plate. If you’re in the mood for something heartier, creamy mashed potatoes or quinoa can make excellent side dishes. You can also serve a fresh salad with mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, and cucumbers, drizzled with some of that reserved honey mustard sauce for extra flavor. For a fun twist, serve the salmon in taco form. Flake the cooked salmon and place it in soft tortillas with some crunchy cabbage, avocado slices, and a drizzle of the honey mustard dressing. This gives a whole new vibe to your meal and is perfect for casual gatherings. Don’t forget about garnishing! A sprinkle of fresh herbs like dill or parsley can elevate the dish visually and add a fresh flavor.

Storage Instructions

If you happen to have leftovers, storing them properly can help maintain the salmon’s flavor and texture. Allow the salmon to cool to room temperature before storing it. Place the leftovers in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator. They should last for about three days. To reheat, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the salmon on a baking sheet and cover it loosely with aluminum foil to prevent it from drying out. Heat for about 10 to 15 minutes, or until warmed through. Alternatively, you can use a microwave, but be cautious as it can make the salmon rubbery. If you want to keep it longer, consider freezing the salmon. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and then in aluminum foil or place it in a freezer-safe bag. Frozen salmon can last for up to two months. Just remember to thaw it in the refrigerator before reheating for the best results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I use instead of mayonnaise?

Greek yogurt works great as a substitute if you want something lighter. Sour cream is another option that adds a nice tangy flavor.

How should I store leftover salmon?

Store leftover salmon in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. Just make sure to keep the honey mustard sauce separate if you have any left.

Can I make the honey mustard sauce ahead of time?

Absolutely, you can prepare the sauce a day in advance and keep it in the fridge. Just give it a good stir before using it on the salmon.

What sides go well with honey mustard salmon?

A fresh salad or some roasted vegetables pair nicely with this dish. You might also consider serving it with quinoa or rice for a complete meal.

What do I do if my salmon is overcooked?

If it turns out dry, try adding a little extra sauce on top when serving to help moisten it up. Next time, keep an eye on the cooking time to avoid overcooking.
